Description
Briefly, the purpose and responsibilities of this position are: to provide general information services, answering basic as well as in-depth reference queries using a variety of primary and secondary sources, while working at various service desks; to provide Interlibrary Loan service, including procuring and processing requested items from other libraries for WPFL users, and preparing locally held materials for distribution to other libraries; to develop, implement, and evaluate collections of non-traditional library items; to coordinate and oversee use of the Community Workshop; and to participate in collection development and management.
Essential functions include:
- Provides general reference and informational services at service desk by: assisting library users in locating materials, performing reader’s advisory, explaining library policies and procedures, assisting computer users and providing basic instruction, operating and troubleshooting equipment, responding to complaints and/or compliments, checking materials in and out, placing items on hold, and collecting fines. Assists with sorting materials, accurately shelving returned materials, and inventories. Conducts tours as needed and delivers presentations about the library and library use to community groups. Takes routine meeting-room reservations.
- Assists in collection development by researching and evaluating materials, ordering assigned fiction genres and assigned-subject nonfiction, monitoring assigned budget areas, and assisting with deselection. Maintains good appearance and order of assigned portion of the library stacks.
- Provides Interlibrary loan services to other libraries and local patrons; selects and evaluates non-traditional library materials, including monitoring their annual budget allocation and participating in deselection; coordinates and manages the community workshop, including in the use of workshop resources for library programs and projects.
- Acts as an effective advocate for the library by explaining its mission, goals, services, and programs.
Requirements
MLS preferred.
A thorough working knowledge of library policies and procedures is required. At least one weekly evening shift and some weekend work will be required.
Experience in working with computers is highly desirable, as are excellent communication and organizational skills.
