Brown University, founded in 1764, is a leading Ivy League institution with a distinctive undergraduate academic program, a world-class faculty, an outstanding graduate program in the arts and sciences, a successful medical school, and a tradition of innovative and rigorous interdisciplinary study. The Brown University Library is one of the nation’s oldest and most distinguished research libraries. The Library contains more than 6 million items, including bound volumes, periodicals, maps, sheet music, digital objects, and manuscripts, in addition to a large and growing body of electronic resources. Six principal facilities comprise the university library system: the John D. Rockefeller Jr. Library, Brown's primary humanities and social-sciences library; the Sciences Library, housing the University's collection of science and medical information resources as well as the Friedman Study Center and the new Science Center; the John Hay Library, housing special collections, including rare books, manuscripts, and the University Archives; the Orwig Music Library; the Art Slide Library; and the Library Collections Annex. The Library’s significant digital collections are managed by its Center for Digital Scholarship, which supports scholarly and academic activities that are conducted or enhanced through the use of digital technology.
Serving a student body of 6, 000 undergraduates and 2,000 graduates and approximately 500 faculty member, the Library employs 65 professional, managerial, and technical staff, along with70 support staff. Brown University Library is an active member of the Association of Research Libraries, the Consortium of Rhode Island Academic and Research Libraries, NERL (the Northeast Research Libraries consortium), and participates in several shared resource agreements.
