Job Overview


Archivists work with historically significant collections inthe Special Collections and University Archives to facilitate their use inteaching and research. Archivistsengage in archival arrangement, preservation, and description followingnational and local best practices and rules of description. Theydemonstrate flexibility and creativity, an understanding of the liberal artseducation mission, and work collaboratively and independently within a dynamic,team-based organization. They will report to the Head of Collectionsand Digital Scholarship and be located on the Allendale Campus.


This position will give the selected candidate theopportunity to:


PROCESS—The Processing Archivist will conduct archival processing, including arrangement,preservation rehousing, labeling, finding aid creation, and other associatedtasks in the Special Collections and University Archives. They will workclosely with the University Archivist and Digital Collections Librarian to evaluate,select, digitize, and catalog items digitized from archival collections.


COLLABORATE—Archivists work collaboratively to ensure that ourapproaches to archival processing balance user needs with archival bestpractices and available resources. Through special projects, they will haveopportunities to work with faculty, staff, and students across the University.We invite applicants who have a user-focused, balanced, and creative approachto their work.


GROW—GVSU Librarians are members of the university faculty with a 12-monthappointment. Librarians engage in scholarship, professional development, andservice to the organization and the profession. There are opportunities to workacross the Libraries and the University to gain experience and knowledge aboutareas of our profession, with an emphasis on collaboration. Librarians at GVSU engagein faculty governance and participatory-style management practices. Inaddition, the successful applicant will gain a greater understanding of how toflourish in an academic setting.
