Job Description

 

PROCESS—The Processing Archivist will conduct archival processing, including arrangement,preservation rehousing, labeling, finding aid creation, and other associated tasks in the Special Collections and University Archives. They will work closely with the University Archivist and Digital Collections Librarian to evaluate,select, digitize, and catalog items digitized from archival collections.

 

COLLABORATE—Archivists work collaboratively to ensure that our approaches to archival processing balance user needs with archival best practices and available resources. Through special projects, they will have opportunities to work with faculty, staff, and students across the University.We invite applicants who have a user-focused, balanced, and creative approach to their work.

 

GROW—GVSU Librarians are members of the university faculty with a 12-month appointment. Librarians engage in scholarship, professional development, and service to the organization and the profession. There are opportunities to work across the Libraries and the University to gain experience and knowledge about areas of our profession, with an emphasis on collaboration. Librarians at GVSU engage in faculty governance and participatory-style management practices. In addition, the successful applicant will gain a greater understanding of how to flourish in an academic setting.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

·  Master’s Degree completed by June 2020 from a program accredited by the American Library Association (ALA) or from a program in a country with a formal accreditation process as identified by ALA, with a specialization or concentration in archives

Ability to function productively and with flexibility in an evolving environment

Ability to work independently and collaboratively

Strong communication and interpersonal skills, such as the ability to interact with others with respect and empathy

Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion as well as a focus on user needs and experience

Confident humility – the ability to simultaneously acknowledge one’s own and others’ expertise and values

Self-starter – identifies work to be done and pursues that in line with the organization’s needs

Curiosity – self-identifies and pursues the need for new skills and knowledge

Ability to lift and carry up to 25lbs and navigate stairs

 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

Understanding of project leadership and/or management

Understanding of archival and digital object description standards, including DACS, EAD, and Dublin Core

Experience working a collection management tool such as ArchivesSpace

Experience digitizing archival materials

Experience processing or conducting research with literary archives

Completed coursework and/or experience in one of the following: archival arrangement and description, preservation, records management, or appraisal
