Job Description

The J. Murrey Atkins Library at UNC Charlotte invites applications for a User Experience Librarian to advance
the initiatives of both J. Murrey Atkins Library and the Assessment Department in providing best in class
services to UNC Charlotte’s diverse user communities. This position will lead the Library’s ongoing activities in
user-centered design and user-experience efforts that align with the strategic plan.

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte is a rapidly growing research intensive University offering over
28,500 students a variety of undergraduate, master’s and doctoral programs in seven academic colleges. UNC
Charlotte’s Atkins Library is a comprehensive research library with over 1.9 million printed books, 930,000 e-
books, over 400 databases, approximately 75,000 journals and an annual budget of over $10 million.
UNC Charlotte is located in the largest city in North Carolina, a beautiful southern city of 775,202 with over 1.5
million in the greater metropolitan area, in one of the fastest growing regions in the country. Located on a 1,000
acre wooded campus, the University is accessible to the city's performing arts and cultural and sports events
and to recreational lakes.

Essential Duties:
● Develop a project plan and scope for Atkins Library’s user experiences efforts that aligns with the
library’s strategic plan.
● Consult with library stakeholders regarding user experience and usability issues and develop project
plans accordingly.
● Plan and carry out activities related to user experience testing to include, but not limited to usability
testing of library systems, on site and video observations, conducting interviews and focus groups with
library users and stakeholders, card sorting activities relating to website information architecture, and
moderating one-on-one and remote usability tests.
● Lead analysis of user experience data.
● Prepare data visualizations, as applicable, relating to data collected in library systems and through
Assessment and UX-related studies. Identify key findings and opportunities.
● Collaborate with diverse colleagues and team members to conceive of new capabilities and potential
solutions for the library to better serve our constituency.
● Write and edit written reports.
● Present findings to our library, university, and professional community.
● Assess, Identify, and address accessibility needs of library patrons.
● Engage library staff and faculty in work practice study in order to promote continuous library
● Provide consultations, trainings, and informational sessions/workshops to library and university staff
relating to user experience and usability best practices.
● Participate in structuring ideation sessions and co-developing concept prototype solutions.
● Engage in professional service and scholarly contributions; participate in committees and faculty
governance in the library and on campus.
● Communicate effectively and positively with diverse groups of individuals.
● Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education/Experience Requirements
● Master’s degree in Library and/or Information Science from a program accredited by the American
Library Association
● Graduation with a master’s degree in a specialized area directly relevant to the position description may
be an acceptable substitute in certain situations if approved by the Dean.
Preferred Education, Skills and Training Experience:
● One year of experience conducting field site analysis, user testing, and working on project teams.
● One year of experience moderating studies (e.g., one-on-one and remote usability tests and focus
groups), observational techniques, participant-observation, and interview techniques.
● Practical experience and/or graduate level coursework in research methods, including both quantitative
and qualitative analysis.
● Practical experience and/or graduate level coursework in creating data visualizations (e.g., Tableau,
Google Data Studio, PowerBI).
● Must be self-directed, but also a team player.
● Must have a strong interest in understanding how people actually conduct their work activities and in
communicating their understandings to others using a variety of techniques: reports, presentations,
scenarios, and visual representations.
● Working knowledge of accessibility issues and solutions for library patrons.
● Strong oral and written communication skills.
● Working knowledge of best practices in website information architecture.
● Ability to work collaboratively as well as independently.
● Ability to work effectively with diverse groups and to create an environment of mutual respect.
● Knowledge of relevant professional and technological issues in assigned areas.
● Ability to work effectively in an organization in which change is both necessary and constant.
