The Collections, Acquisitions, and Discovery (CAD) Division is comprised of three departments (Discovery Services, Continuing Resources and Collections, and Scholarly Communication Initiatives) and has 20 staff. CAD supports the University and Libraries’ teaching, research and community engagement missions by acquiring, organizing, maintaining and making discoverable all needed and relevant materials, regardless of format and ownership, in the most efficient, effective and innovative ways possible.


Reporting to the Head of Discovery Services, the Specialized Collections Catalog Librarian will work to enable timely, comprehensive and effective discovery of UNLV Libraries collections with particular focus on Special Collections and Archives.

The Specialized Collections Catalog Librarian will serve as the lead cataloger for materials in Special Collections and Archives, working closely with colleagues in the Discovery Services department and in the Libraries’ Special Collections and Archives division to enable discovery of materials in all formats, including monographs, serials, media, and archival collections. Arrangement, processing and archival description of materials are managed by the Special Collections and Archives Technical Services department; the role of the Specialized Collections Catalog Librarian is focused on completing the cataloging and ensuring materials are described to local, national and international standards with original cataloging records contributed to OCLC WorldCat.

The Libraries’ strategic plan advocates for the contribution of knowledge and expertise to global conversations and initiatives. To support this direction and improve the representation of access points relevant to the Libraries’ unique and regional collections, the Libraries has an articulated goal to join cooperative efforts such as the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC)’s Name Authority Cooperative (NACO) and Subject Authority Cooperative (SACO) programs. The Specialized Collections Catalog Librarian will lead this direction and will be expected to work collaboratively with library catalogers to successfully achieve this goal. The department will also be exploring additional participation in conversations and initiatives related to linked data and standards work, and the incumbent will have the opportunity to help define this participation.

The Specialized Collections Catalog Librarian will also contribute to work across the department by participating in the ongoing development and reconciliation of cataloging policies and workflows. The incumbent may also serve as cataloger for additional specific portions of the Libraries’ collections to be assigned based on the candidate’s interests and skill set within the context of the priorities of the Libraries and the Libraries’ strategic plan.

As a faculty member, the incumbent will be expected to engage in scholarly activities and to provide service to the university, community, and profession in accordance with UNLV and University Libraries standards for promotion and tenure.


This position requires an earned Master’s Degree in library or information science from an American Library Association accredited program by the date of appointment.


  • Competence and sensitivity in working at a university in which students, faculty, and staff are broadly diverse with regard to many facets of identity, including but not limited to gender, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, and religion.
  • Strong working knowledge of cataloging standards and practices (both MARC and non-MARC).
  • Three years of recent original cataloging experience using OCLC Connexion and contributing records to OCLC WorldCat.
  • Experience cataloging using RDA, LCC and LCSH.
  • Experience cataloging unique materials such as archival collections and/or oral histories.
  • Experience with name/subject authority work.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with others.
  • Aptitude for complex, analytical, and technical work with an attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and competing deadlines.


  • Experience with the Ex Libris Alma library services platform and Primo discovery layer.
  • Experience contributing name authority records through NACO or submitting proposals through SACO.
  • Experience with tools used to batch manipulate metadata such as MarcEdit, OpenRefine, etc.
  • Experience with archives information management systems such as ArchivesSpace, and standards for archival description such as DACS.
  • Experience in an additional specialized area of cataloging such as serials, maps, or government documents.


This is a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track position at Rank II (equivalent to an Assistant Professor) or a tenure-track/tenured position at Rank III (equivalent to an Associate Professor). Salary competitive with those at similarly situated institutions. The position is contingent upon funding with a minimum starting salary of $65,000.
