Reporting to the Library Director, the Electronic Resources Coordinator manages library e-resources and discovery tools to ensure seamless and reliable access to CMU patrons. The Electronic Resources Coordinator has extensive knowledge of the complex concepts and issues related to the life cycle of e-resources throughout the process to acquire, provide access, administer, provide support, monitor, and evaluate.


Using established methods for systems analysis, troubleshoots, monitors and maintains continuous access to subscribed e-content.Communicates access problems with library staff, and addresses problems when necessary.

Manages the technical settings of e-resources to ensure optimal functionality.

Maintains authentication protocols, specifically the proxy configuration files, for electronic resources. Updates and customizes interfaces for electronic resource access and discovery.

Serves as library’s liaison to vendors and IT staff, and provides timely, high quality technical support to library staff and users.

Maintains complete and comprehensive vendor information in the ERM (Gold Rush).

Manages review of contracts by negotiating pricing and license agreements.

Manages library contract database.

Manages the data collection, analysis, and manipulation process and provides meaningful interpretation to evaluate electronic resources.

Gathers database usage statistics using industry established methods.

Creates a database renewal schedule to ensure systematic, rigorous evaluation and timely renewals.

Provides web maintenance and enhancements complying with campus marketing standards and in consultation with library staff.

Provides research services through individual consultations, chat, and regularly scheduled hours at the Research Help Desk including evening and weekend rotations.

Serves as a departmental liaison by selecting materials, providing instruction and preparing collection assessments.

Serves on committees as assigned.

Recognizes and proactively addresses persistent problems with access, technology or interoperability. Investigates and recommends possible solutions.

Sets up and monitors database trials, and communicates their availability to faculty and staff.

Provides internal training and information on e-resources.

Monitors vendor sites to manage title changes in dynamic e-collections.

Monitors vendors’ pricing policies and package deals.

Evaluates workflows to maximize efficiency and enhance effective access to electronic resources.

Evaluates e-resources for relevancy, ease of use, cost, and content overlap/gaps.

Documents procedures to set-up and maintain e-resources.

Maintains record of vendor correspondence. Tracks and documents service issues so that others may step in when necessary.

Maintains, monitors and updates an electronic journals list and link resolver (Gold Rush).

Develops procedures to periodically test access to electronic content.

Stays abreast of best practices, trends and emerging technologies in order to evaluate and implement relevant improvements to enhance library services.

Keeps abreast of licensing issues and trends.

Promotes awareness of e-content and alerts librarians of under-utilized resources.

Promotes accessibility for electronic resources.

Researches and analyzes new products and offers to identify possible alternatives to current subscriptions.

Serves as backup for troubleshooting problems related to individual e-book and e-journal titles normally handled by the Head of Technical Services.

Serves as backup for exporting bibliographic data to external databases such as Gold Rush or RapidILL.

Other duties as assigned.


Knowledge of the principles and practices related to electronic resources and electronic collections.

Knowledge of the range of content usage statistics and the ability to extract/present them in a meaningful way.

Familiarity with markup languages (e.g. HTML, XML, wiki).

Knowledge and ability to solve patron access problems.

Demonstrated ability to approach problems in a proactive, positive way.

Demonstrated ability to frame situations according to others’ perspectives in order to facilitate troubleshooting (with vendors, consortia, IT, patrons).

Conceptual and practical knowledge enabling interoperability between library e-resources such as the ILS (Sierra), discovery layers (EDS), digital repository (DSpace), proxy servers (EZproxy), link resolvers (Gold Rush), and patron’s devices.

Conceptual and practical knowledge of MARC and other metadata, cataloging standards, and bibliographic utilities.


May supervise student workers.

An ALA accredited Master’s Degree in Library Science.

2 years’ professional experience managing library e-resources.


Experience working in an academic library.

Experience working in a consortial or shared environment.


Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from administrators, faculty, staff and the general public.


Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions, percentages as related to fiscal management.


Strategic and analytical reasoning skills are necessary. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
