Dean, University Libraries and Scholarly Communications

The Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of University Libraries and Scholarly Communications. The University seeks an accomplished and visionary administrator to lead its world-class research library and build on a strong track record of innovation in providing exceptional facilities, vibrant collections, and impactful services. The Dean of University Libraries and Scholarly Communications leads Penn State’s information resources enterprise, which is integral to the University’s fulfillment of its tripartite mission of teaching, research, and service at all of its campuses. The Dean collaborates with key stakeholders in academic and administrative units University-wide to advance and achieve Penn State’s goals in alignment with the University’s land-grant mission, institutional values, and strategic plan. As the head of Penn State’s national top 10 research library, the Dean has primary responsibility for strategic and operational leadership involving budgets, strategic planning, University Libraries faculty and staff, information technology, infrastructure, collections, fundraising, and scholarly communications. As the official representative and advocate for the University Libraries and Penn State University Press, the Dean also is responsible for fostering cooperative participation in academic programs, Big Ten Academic Alliance partnership arrangements, government and grant-sponsored programs, and information resource industry relationships. The Dean is a member of the Academic Leadership Council and the University Park Council of Academic Deans. With an annual operating budget of approximately $57.5 million, the University Libraries comprise 13 libraries at University Park and libraries at 22 other campuses, including the Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. Its collections include more than 8.6 million volumes, 7.2 million titles, and 2.2 million electronic books, as well as extensive holdings of maps, microforms, government publications, archives, and audiovisual materials. The University Libraries have 511 full-time equivalent faculty and staff, including 224 tenured or tenure-track faculty and professional staff, 258 support staff, and 29 student assistants. Penn State’s next Dean of University Libraries and Scholarly Communications will bring to this role: Significant and progressive leadership experience in a comprehensive university research library; A distinguished record of operational leadership demonstrating excellence, growth, and financial effectiveness; A staunch commitment to developing a diverse workforce and to advancing inclusion and diversity goals within the University Libraries; The ability to promote cooperation in a multi-campus, collegial, and consortia environment and support the teaching, research, and service missions of a large public university and the intellectual and service missions of its libraries; A demonstrated record of success in fundraising, donor cultivation, and public relations; and An understanding of the major issues and trends facing academic research libraries and scholarly communications. Sustained achievement in scholarship and research in librarianship or another discipline meriting tenure at the highest rank available in the University Libraries or one of the University’s academic units is required. A Master of Library Science degree or its equivalent from an accredited program is preferred.
