Job Description
The purpose of this position is to plan, direct, and promote children’s services at the Wichita Falls Public Library. Duties include developing, coordinating, and implementing programs and events for children; serving as a liaison to schools and community organizations that support children and families; assisting patrons with reference, technology, and information inquiries at the public service desk; and participating in the selection and maintenance of the children’s collection. The position also provides instruction and assistance in the use of library resources, computers, and materials. This position requires at least one evening shift per week and alternating weekends.
Essential Functions:
- Regular and reliable attendance in compliance with given schedules is a mandatory requirement of this position. Schedules may be subject to change with or without advance notice
- Provide general reference and informational services at service desk by: assisting library users in locating materials, performing reader’s advisory, explaining library policies and procedures, assisting computer users and providing basic instruction, operating and troubleshooting equipment, responding to complaints and/or compliments. Assist with accurately shelving materials and inventories. Take routine meeting-room reservations.
- Support collection development by researching, evaluating, and recommending children's materials for acquisition. Submit orders to specialized vendors of children's resources. Develop non-traditional materials for in-house use and circulation. Monitor budget allocations. Assist in the deselection process for children's materials. Maintains good appearance and order of assigned portion of the library stacks.
- Provide children’s services at the library, including leading weekly programs, summer activities, handouts, take-home projects, and other offerings. Collaborate with the Program Librarian, Teen Librarian, and other staff in planning and implementing summer programs and library events. Maintain an organized, clean, and welcoming Youth Area. May provide direction to a library assistant as needed.
- Promote activities and services in the Youth Area using a variety of resources in conjunction with other relevant staff and city departments. Serve as a liaison to local schools and organizations supporting children and families. Conduct tours. Capture photos and videos of children’s programs and events for promotional and social media purposes. Create themed displays and promotional materials to highlight the library’s offerings, literacy initiatives, and timely information. Develop reader’s advisory tools such as bookmarks and brochures, as well as signage and wayfinding.
Requirements
Minimum Job Requirements
- Bachelor of Science degree or a Master's Degree
- Experience over two years and up to and including four years.
Experience working in a library setting and/or with children is highly desirable. An MLIS/MLS is preferred.
