Primary Purpose of Department
The Head of Strategic Analytics and Special Projects leads library assessment and student engagement & success research; advises and serves as a resource for library administration including budget and finance planning, grant writing/grant support, librarian research support, and national and regional engagement; and leads special projects as assigned.
Work includes:
- Promoting a culture of assessment across the J. Murrey Atkins Library by coordinating a comprehensive assessment program that includes quantitative, qualitative, and usability practices to document impact on our patrons and make evidence-based decisions to continuously improve programs, services, and spaces. This position oversees and participates in assessment opportunities throughout the university and promotes a data-informed approach to achieving strategic goals. This includes ensuring the collection, analysis, and reporting of both qualitative and quantitative data; consulting on assessment methods; and providing training on various assessment tools and techniques.
- Coordinating the design and implementation of assessment projects using a variety of methodologies and creating reports that include analysis, findings, recommendations and other products as appropriate. This includes responsibility for gathering and reporting data to local, regional, and national entities.
- Performs usability studies, qualitative research, statistical analysis, data visualization, and other assessment activities.
- Providing expertise and training on assessment-related topics. This position also serves on campus-wide assessment committees, collaborates with other campus groups on assessment activities, and participates actively in professional organizations locally, regionally, and nationally.
- Participating in the library’s Strategic Planning Committee; creating tools to assist the library in conducting strategic planning; developing and advising on the creation of strategic metrics; and contributes to annual reports relating to annual strategic plan accomplishments.
- Advising and serving as a resource for library administration related to budget and finance planning; grant writing/grant support; librarian research; and national and regional engagement.
- Leading special projects as assigned.
Description of Work

Library faculty are expected to collaborate within the Library and beyond in the performance of professional duties that may include, but are not limited to: selecting, organizing, preserving, and facilitating access to materials; supporting teaching, learning, and research; providing outreach to the campus and community; and developing and maintaining digital and technological innovations.
Library faculty participate in scholarly research, creative endeavors, and professional activities to serve the Library, the University, and the information professions. Library faculty are strongly encouraged to pursue external funding for library-related initiatives.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Leads library assessment and integrates assessment and evidence-based decision-making across the Library.
- Coordinates data collection, storage, processing, and dissemination for decision-making and reporting.
- Analyzes and reports quantitative and qualitative data gathered from various sources in the Library and across campus.
- Collaborates on assessment research projects across the Library and supports assessment-focused data collection, analysis, and dissemination of findings.
- Explores and communicates new assessment methods, including analysis and data collection to library staff.
- Provides consultation to library staff on assessment methods including usability testing, data collection and analysis.
- Participates in the library’s Strategic Planning Committee; creating tools to assist the library in conducting strategic planning; developing and advising on the creation of strategic metrics; and contributes to annual reports relating to annual strategic plan accomplishments.
- Develops and implements internal training on assessment methods, data collection and analysis, and technologies.
- Works closely with campus OneIT on business intelligence systems, assessment data storage, and data security.
- Coordinates the data collection for annual reports, strategic plans, and surveys.
- Ensures a collegial, team-oriented work environment.
- Displays excellent customer service and interpersonal skills when working with patrons and colleagues.
- Plans for, hires, develops, and manages reporting personnel, including faculty, staff, student assistants, interns, and non-student temps.
- Advises and serves as a resource for library administration related to budget/finance planning; grant writing and support; library-led research activities; and regional and national engagement.
- Leads special projects as assigned.
Minimum Experience/Education
Completion of a master’s degree in the field of library and information science from a program accredited by the American Library Association by the time selected applicant begins job.
Preferred Education, Skills and Experience
- A minimum of 2 years of professional experience in an academic library, or equivalent professional experience.
- Academic coursework or relevant professional experience in statistical methods, qualitative methods, and research design.
- Documented experience in the development and implementation of assessment strategies in libraries, higher education, or other complex organizations.
- Experience using a variety of quantitative and qualitative approaches to assessment such as user-centered design, ethnographic research, usability studies, or evaluation design.
- Demonstrated ability to perform data analyses and to present complicated information in easy to understand formats, e.g. data visualization, charts, tables, etc.
- Working knowledge of data visualization and statistical software tools.
- Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Experience collecting and reporting statistics in a complex organization.
- Experience with SQL and database structure.
- Experience in project management.
- Experience with supporting accreditation efforts in higher education.
- Experience with national library assessment programs, e.g., LibQUAL+, Project Information Literacy, NSSE, Value of Academic Libraries.

Necessary Licenses/Certifications
Completion of a master’s degree in the field of library and information science from a program accredited by the American Library Association by the time selected applicant begins job.
Graduation with a master’s degree in a specialized area directly relevant to the position description may be an acceptable substitution in certain situations if approved by the Dean.
