About the Research, Instruction, and Access Services Division:
The Libraries' Research, Instruction, and Access Services Division (RIAS) supports UO students and faculty by building and delivering relevant collections and services; facilitating access to local and remotely-held library resources; implementing and participating in innovative outreach and engagement activities; providing online and face-to-face information and data literacy instruction; and promoting access to affordable course materials. RIAS encompasses six major service areas: Access Services, Data Services, E-learning and Open Education Resources, Research and Instructional Services, Undergraduate Engagement, and five branch libraries.
Position Summary
UO Libraries is seeking a highly motivated, forward-thinking, and customer-focused individual to join the Research, Instruction, and Access Services Division as the next Assistant Director of Access Services. We are seeking a candidate who embraces change and innovation, is eager to welcome a challenge, and has experience in library public service. The Assistant Director collaborates with fellow members of the departmental management team to provide administration and management of the Lending Services unit in Knight Library.

Responsibilities include providing functional and strategic leadership to meet the changing service needs of UO Libraries' customers; managing 3.0 FTE non-exempt, represented employees and approximately 4.5 FTE part-time library student assistants; serving as UO Libraries' technical lead for Alma Fulfillment and Springshare's LibCal; managing UO Libraries billing processes for overdue, lost, and damaged material; working with stakeholders to devise assessment tools and strategies to improve public services; leading and completing special projects; helping to ensure the safety and security of library resources and users; understanding and appropriately responding to the needs of library customers; helping manage, oversee, and participate in public services at Knight Library; and representing the Director of Access Services in their absence.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Three (3) years of experience within the last five (5) years providing or overseeing public services in libraries (e.g., circulation, reference, course reserves, ILL).
  • One (1) year of supervisory experience.
    Professional Competencies
  • Proficiency in multiple library systems (e.g., integrated library system, interlibrary loan management system, institutional repository).
  • Demonstrated ability to remain current in and think analytically, strategically, and creatively about library public services.
  • Demonstrated ability to devise and lead projects and complete tasks that require precision and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to consistently provide and model appropriate and user-focused customer service.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise and manage direct reports and foster a team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to remain flexible and adapt to rapid change and ambiguity.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member to balance workloads, prioritize, and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively utilize and follow various channels and flows of communication.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully resolve technological, procedural, and other types of problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to remain current in, interpret, determine compliance with, and enforce policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulations in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work within and foster a diverse work environment.
    Preferred Qualifications
  • One (1) year or more of work experience within the last five (5) years in a large academic, research, or public library.
  • Experience enhancing customer service in a large business or organization.
  • One (1) year of experience within the last three (3) years working extensively within the Alma ILS Fulfillment, Configuration, and Analytics modules.
  • Administrative use of the Springshare LibCal space management system.
